In 1989 John went to Moscow by invitation of Greenpeace (environment group). John was Australia's representative to help launch the album Rainbow Warriors. Other such artists appearing on the album were Annie Lennox (of the Eurythmics), Peter Gabriel, Chrissie Hynde, and The Edge (U2).
John also performed at the Prince's Trust Concert in London in the presence of Prince Charles, and Princess Diana.

1990 realised the Chain Reaction album and later in the year went on the road with the Chain Reaction Tour.

1991 released Full House. This album consisted of live music and featured the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
In the same year he recorded When Something is Wrong With My Baby with Jimmy Barnes (former Cold Chisel lead singer), and did a small pub tour.

In 1992 John starred as Jesus in the Australian concert version of Jesus Christ Superstar. The cast consisted of Kate Ceberano as Mary Madgalene, Jon Stevens as Judas, Angry Anderson as Herod, John Waters as Pontius Pilate, and Russell Morris as Simon Zealotes. Over 1 million people in Australia saw the show, and it became Australia’s most successful concert tours.
John also was awarded the Australian Music Awards' Crystal Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to the Industry.

1993 such songwriters as Ross Fraser (Producer), Phil Buckle (Southern Sons), Richard Marx (American singer/songwriter) and John got together and John released Then Again.

Early in 1994 John hit the road with The Talk Of The Town Tour.

1996 released Romeo's Heart and toured with the Jack Of Hearts Tour. 1996 also marked the 10 year anniversary of Whispering Jack, and with that John re-releases Whispering Jack.
John makes the Australia Day Honours List. He is awarded the Order Of Australia in recognition of his services to Music and Charity.

1997 John performs at the Crown Casino Opening Concert in Melbourne alongside such people as Ray Charles, Kylie Minogue, Anthony Warlow, and James Morrison.
Later that year marks 30 years in the music business for John. In honour of this occasion he released 3 albums – Anthology 1: Greatest Hits 1986-1997, Anthology 2: Classic Hits 1967-1985, Anthology 3: Rarities.
In the same year John is recognised as the Most Broadcast Australian Recording Artist by the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia.
Also, John records Everytime You Cry with Human Nature, and it becomes the most played song on Australian radio for that year.

In 1998 John toured with Olivia Newton-John and Anthony Warlow with The Main Event. In the round and backed by a forty piece orchestra and the Farnham Band. The first half of the show was solo sections, the second half was duets and trios.
1st July 1999 John celebrated his 50th Birthday with some friends ... Kate Ceberano, Ross Wilson, Merril Bainbridge, Nana-Zhami (Rob Farnham, Nicka Heyblok, Simon Heyblok, and Kim McCarthy), James Reyne, and Human Nature (Toby Allen, Phil Burton, Andrew Tierney, and Michael Tierney). Together they performed a number of duets and paid tribute by singing some of John's hit songs throughout the years. Thousands of enduring fans gathered in the streets outside the Regent Theatre to wish John a happy birthday. It just goes to show you how much John is adored and loved by everybody. click to enlarge

21 October 1999 John performs at the National Trust Gala Dinner at the Sydney Town Hall along side Don Burrows, Ruth Cracknell and John Bell.

17 November 1999 John and Glenn visit East Timor to see the Australian Troops.

20 November 1999 appeared on the last show ever of Hey Hey It's Saturday. Sang Everytime You Cry with Stuart Fraser, Joe Creighton, Lisa Edwards, and Lindsay Field.

21 December 1999 The Tour Of Duty Concert was held in Dili for the Australian Troops and the people of Timor. Glenn Wheatley organised the Concert and John performed with other great Australian artists such as Kylie Minogue, Doc Neeson (of The Angels), Gina Jeffreys, James Blundell, The Living End, Dili Allstars, Royal Military College Band, and the night was compared by Roy and HG.
