Johnny (23) and Jillian (17) were married on 18 April 1973 at St Matthew's Anglican Church, Glenroy Victoria. The Vicar was Rev Gabb.

Originally a double wedding was planned for both Johnny and Jillian, and Jillian's sister Judy and her fiancé Vince. Darryl hated this idea as he felt that if Johnny really had to get married than it had to be the wedding of the year, and he wasn't going to have anyone ruin that. Phyllis (Jillian's Mother) hated Darryl, and all of this drama ended up causing problems between Johnny and Phyllis.

Details of the Wedding were leaked to the press and when Johnny and Jillian arrived they were confronted by thousands of fans. Most of them adoring female fans that hated Jillian and even tried to rip her dress when she walked past.

After the Wedding they enjoyed their honeymoon on Brampton Island.

Jillian only has one photo of her wedding day as the photographer that was hired disappeared after the ceremony ... negatives and all.

Johnny said the decision to split up "just got blurted out in a serious of blurts". Their work had "become like work - it never has been in the past". Darryl said "we have gone as far as we can go with one another at this stage".

Johnny asked Kenn Brodziack to handle his affairs, and he agreed but only to handle the contracts but not the day to day stuff. Johnny did the comedy "Bobby Dazzler" with Maurie Fields and then worked on the Channel 7 talent show "Opportunity Knocks". He was getting a couple of film scripts and a lot of stage shows, but he was primarily a singer so would only accept things that seemed right at the time.

He did a show in the Sydney Leagues Club called "Roberta" which Kenn didn't really want Johnny to do it so he asked for a lot of money, the number 1 dressing room and that Jillian have a part too. Kenn described it as "an absolute hoot for which we were grossly over paid".

During this time Jillian went everywhere with Johnny they ended up seeing a lot of the Country and got to spend quality time together. They did manage to take holiday's overseas even though they didn't have a lot of money.

Johnny and Jillian visited Colleen Hewitt and husband Danny Finley in the USA in early 1978. It was here that Johnny and Danny arranged a management deal. Danny believed that Johnny needed new songs to increase his popularity.

Johnny did TV appearances on The Don Lane Show, and in Sydney clubs. He was one of the top performers on The Don Lane Show and at that stage refused to work for any other show. Johnny and Danny still couldn't get a record label, not even EMI was interested.

Johnny, Danny, Colleen and another partner set-up a restaurant called "Backstage" in a building next to the Princess Theatre in Spring Street, Melbourne. None of them knew anything about running a restaurant and unfortunately it didn't work out. Johnny and Danny ended up with major financial problems, which cost Johnny his holiday farm in Eildon. At this point Johnny also received a large tax bill for not paying tax for 9 years. Things were not going well for him.

Somewhere around this time, while trying to change his image, he changed his name from Johnny Farnham to John Farnham.

In 1979 John and Jillian visited the USA where they saw the Little River Band playing in Las Vegas. It was here that John and Glenn Wheatley (Little River Band manager) discussed doing an album to get John back into main stream music. It took another year before he and Glenn signed an agreement.

In the interim John did the "Uncovered" album with Graham Goble. The first single "Help" (Lennon/McCartney) gave John his first successful hit in almost 7 years. It also changed a lot of people's minds about him. He had shown them that he was little Johnny Farnham.

Also in 1980 John did a Variety Series on ABC TV with Debbie Byrne called 'Farnham and Byrne'. John won The Australian Variety Artists 'MO' Awards, "Entertainer Of The Year". Australia's Premier Awards for excellence in live performance. He performed at a Royal Command Performance, which was televised to all of Australia where he sang "Help".

John and Jillian had been trying to have children ever since they were first married. There was nothing wrong with either of them it just wasn't happening. They tried artificial insemination and even adoption. It wasn't until the adoption papers were signed and the unfortunate passing of Jillian's father, Robert, that she finally became pregnant. On 27 September 1981 their first son, Robert, was born.

Glenn in an attempt to break John's showbiz image, formed "The Farnham Band". The first couple of gigs were "terrible", as described by Glenn. New Years Eve 1981, their 3rd gig, they started to get through to the crowd and to this day they hold the record at Melbourne's Billboard Nightclub for the largest attendance.

A change of name, and a change in music ...
